Bachelor General Biology

The standard period of study for a Bachelor's degree in Biology is 6 semesters. At KIT, the program can be divided into two phases.
In phase 1 (1st-4th semester), the basics of biology and related natural sciences are taught:

  • central lecture "General Biology" leads through all areas

  • Practicals are linked with the lectures to form modules

  • Basis in chemistry, physics and mathematics

In phase 2 (5th + 6th semester), the basics are combined in a research- and practice-oriented manner.
Increasing independence leads to a small research project in the 6th semester with the Bachelor's thesis.

1st Semester General Biology

The Structure and Function of Life module provides a general introduction to the fundamentals of biology. This includes the molecular basics of cell biology and genetics as well as the morphology and anatomy of animals and plants and the mechanisms of evolution. The module consists of three lectures and two accompanying practicals.

2nd Semester General Biology

The General Biology 2 module continues the mechanisms and laws taught in the BA-01 module at the level of the organism (physiology, biochemistry and developmental biology). In addition, the levels are brought together at the level of communities of organisms, i.e. ecosystems (biodiversity, ecology). This is also about gaining an overview of the diversity of life forms and acquiring knowledge of forms.

3rd Semester General Biology

The General Biology 3 module deepens the molecular foundations of modern biology. In addition to the molecular biology of plants as part of the plant physiology practical course, the program therefore includes lectures in microbiology, genetics and molecular biology, which are deepened by an accompanying molecular biology practical course.

4th Semester General Biology

In the 4th semester, you will focus on modern biological methods. The entire spectrum of biological methods is presented and thoroughly covered in a lecture series. The lecture is accompanied by a practical part (yeast part and profiling pratica). The students circulate in small teams through different institutes and get to know different research questions. In a separate bioinformatics block, students are also familiarized with theoretical methods of biology and database searches.

5th Semester General Biology

The 5th semester is about concepts. On the one hand, what has been dealt with in the previous semesters should be put in relation to each other. On the other hand, it is about what distinguishes craftsmanship from science, namely the ability to reflect on one's own approaches and their limitations and to deal explicitly with the fundamentals of scientific thinking. The lecture "Biogeography" will give you an overview of biogeographical processes such as speciation, invasion, dispersal and extinction. Important methods of biogeography are also addressed.

6th Semester General Biology

Here, independent work on a scientific topic is practiced. This takes place in small teams, which are supervised but work very independently. The topics are integrated into ongoing research projects of the working groups offering the course. The internships ultimately lead to the first individual research project: the Bachelor's thesis
